Using Board Games as Writing Inspiration

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Lately I’ve been finding writing inspiration all around me. Being a science-fiction author, I am drawn to anything outer-space… be it t-shirts, wall art, or games. I recently attended a board game convention with my family in St. Louis. At the convention there were so many space-themed board games that I was in my element. Talk about inspiration! Of course, we couldn’t pass up expanding our board game collection and brought home a few new games.

If you like board games, I highly recommend Terraforming Mars, Star Realms, Scythe, and Magnastorm. Terraforming Mars is a fun board-based game where you work to develop Mars into a habitable planet while growing the power of your corporation. Star Realms is a deck-building game in which you are battling for control over the galaxy by trading to increase your ships and bases. Scythe is also a board-based game set in an alternate timeline where you are using mechs to battle for control over the land. I especially love the art for Scythe. While it isn’t a space game, it is definitely science-fiction with its mix of farmers and mechs. Magnastorm is a resource gathering game as you try to build science labs and stay ahead of the magnastorm. We enjoyed test playing Magnastorm at the convention, but we haven’t had a chance to play it again…yet!
